Warm breeze, a hazy sunlight, a hot water and a bright sunlight, that’s what summer is about. Whenever there is summer, hydration and electrolyte balance are common among horses. Keeping your horse hydrated and fit is one of the biggest challenges that as a horse owner you can encounter in summer. It’s the time where your horse can get dehydrated, or can develop certain allergies. It is recommended that as a horse owner we should always watch out for signs of various conditions. These conditions can be dehydration, skin allergies, respiratory allergies, and travelling stress. Water is an important component of life, no one can survive without water. Keeping your horse hydrated by making him drink 5 to 10 gallons per day at a moderate temperature of 68°F is recommended. Similarly, a horse will need 19 to 24 gallons of water at a temperature of 95°F. As water keep your horse hydrated then there is another mechanism called sweating mechanism. It is the basic mechanism to remove excess heat from your horse body and is typically made up of water and electrolytes.
Electrolytes are the free, ionized minerals with an electrical charge circulating in a watery solution, like blood or tissue fluid, and within cells. There are some essential electrolytes that a horse body require. These are: sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium and calcium. Phosphorus, zinc, iron, copper and manganese are also electrolytes. All of these electrolytes are essential for the horse’s daily functioning and maintenance. These electrolytes are equally available in supplementation products. If adequate supplementation is not provided your horse can develop electrolytic deficiencies like fatigue and muscle weakness. Similarly, hydration and electrolyte replacement are essential to decrease the risk of thermoregulatory dysfunction to encounter dehydration and allergies common in hot, humid conditions. Hence a fresh water with plain salt and supplementary electrolytes should be provided to your horse. Then there are allergic issues like respiratory and skin allergies, these are common in hot summer season. Skin allergic reactions can be moulds, spores and insect bites. Dietry supplementation can help in these issues. It is recommended that supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids, trace minerals, vitamins and antioxidants is an excellent preventive measure to combat seasonal allergies.
