The dangers of too demanding training regimens, such as those involving high speeds and lengthy distances, are highlighted by two recent studies. One study that polled 66 racehorse trainers in Victorian discovered that more than half galloped their horses more frequently than was recommended by the risk thresholds for bone and muscle problems. The other study found that the risk of bone and muscle injuries rose with the amount of high-speed activity (training and racing together).

Racehorses' most common injuries during competitions, training and tests involve their muscles, bones, tendons, and ligaments. And in worst cases, Euthanasia should be performed right away for serious wounds such as fracturing and torn ligaments or tendons that cause pain or discomfort and are unable to heal.

Racehorses can also pass away abruptly during or right after a race, possibly from heart failure or another illness called exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH), which dilates blood vessels into the lungs. This has been connected to instances where horses have been overworked to win.
