Equine Cartilage Degeneration or Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common reason why horses go lame and don't do as well as they should.

OA can occur at any age. Most of the time, this condition affects older horses, but it can also affect horses that do well in competitions.

The cartilage is a basic structure which if in good condition, along with joint fluid, protects the bones and absorbs the shock of repeated stress during exercise. The intense training that performance horses go through requires much more than what the cartilage can get, which affects the nutritional health of the cartilage.

So, repetitive microtrauma or direct macrotrauma as a result on intense training can cause cartilage to lose or lose some of its ability to resist compression and it begins to physically break down, leading to joint dysfunction and, of course, poor performance.
